It’s been such a busy and productive year so far we’ve barely had time to write these updates, but it’s important for us to share our work so that you can help keep up accountable.
Our first AGM is on 18th September in Springfield (by Wigan Centre), It’s 2pm until 3pm and everyone is welcome. Come and find out what we’ve been up to and what our plans for the future are. This is also your opportunity to join our team if you’d like to be a member of the committee. You don’t need to be an expert, we’re open to all kinds of help and there is a wide range of roles from gardening and digging, to writing, planning, bid writing, and all sorts. We’re friendly and passionate about what we’re doing.
Please message us if you’d like to attend.
We’re working on our free seed giveaway this autumn, but are trying to do it slightly differently. We’re arranging days all around the borough where you can come and pick up a pack.
In Sept, check out the Seed request page for days coming up, we want to get to as many of you as possible!
This took a lot of time and planning, but this Summer we removed the redundant concrete flags on the corner of Hamilton St and Tyldesley Road in Atherton, and put down tons (literally) of soil from SED Ltd – they make their soil from food waste and kindly donated the soil to us for free.
We then sowed a mixture of native and non natives flowers and grass to make a beautiful mixed display. We’ve had so many lovely comments and it has really brightened up the view as you come into town.
We’re due to cut it down pretty soon for Autumn.
We entered our wildlife pond and wildflower meadow for North West in bloom for the second year. This summer the area is much more established, and we also have a new native flower border.
We had a lovely chat with the judges and will find out the results in late October.
Almost every Wednesday we garden somewhere around Wigan borough. This year we’ve mainly been working on our Mesnes Park hub (though now this is briefly paused), Tyldesley Upper George Street car park with the amazing neighbours there, we planted some herbs and flowers at Atherton Cemetery with Friends of Atherton Cemetrery and funding from Food for Life Gettogethers, and hoping to add to that with more funding, and at St Anne’s in Beech Hill where we manage, the pond, a few borders and help out on the veg beds.
If you’d like to join us in gardening, please see our Facebook or Instagram for updates. It really is a lovely session, we’re family friendly and we love to meet new people. Learn more about volunteering with us here
